Upcoming Events

Meet the Author, Bill McKibben, Tuesday, March 9, 7:30 p.m. (College of St. Scholastica) and   First United Methodist Church (“Coppertop”) Wednesday, March 10, 8:30 a.m.

Bill McKibben is the author of 12 books, including his powerful and provocative manifesto, Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, McKibben offers the biggest challenge in a generation to the prevailing view of our economy. The book makes the compelling case for moving beyond “growth” as the paramount economic ideal and pursuing prosperity in a more local direction, with regions producing more of their own food, generating more of their own energy, and even creating more of their own culture and entertainment. Our purchases need not be at odds with the things we truly value, and the more we nurture the essential humanity of our economy, the more we will recapture our own.

Lenten Musicale Sunday, March 21, 2 p.m.

Kristin Peterson, flute; Makenzie Morse, cantor; Peter Grunwald, trombone; and Pastor David, piano and organ, will present a program of music for this season of Lent. Mark your calendars and bring your friends. A freewill offering will be received.

Joint Religious Legislative Coalition (JRLC), Day on the Hill, “Justice We Pursue” Thursday, March 25

As people of faith, we are challenged by our faith traditions to be advocates for the welfare of our neighbor. Rabbi Harold J. Kravitz is the keynote speaker as the JRLC Day on the Hill begins at the River Center in downtown St. Paul. After briefing sessions to learn about particular issues at the Capitol regarding poverty, health care, judicial fairness, housing, and taxation, we will go to the Capitol to engage our legislators about these issues.

Bus transportation between Duluth and St. Paul is available. For more information, see www.jrlc.org or call CHUM at 720-6521.

Lay Leader Extravaganza  “The Marks of Discipleship”, Saturday, March 27, 9:15 - 4:00 pm  (Lutheran Church of the Good Sheperd in Duluth)

Expect a day filled with mission and ministry, practical information, and resources galore!

The keynote presenter is Pastor Stephen Bouman, former bishop of the Metropolitan New York Synod, who served in that role during the time of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson describes Bouman: “He has a passion to proclaim Christ, make disciples and build up the church for the sake of the world.”

Registration fee for the event is $20 per person or $15 each for groups of four or more. Please call the church office for more information or go to the synod website for a brochure at www.nemnsynod.org.
